Duke Energy now has their new $3.5 Billion Edwardsport coal gasification power plant online.
Mechanical problems though have caused the shiny new and very over budget plant to generate a mere 4 percent of its maximum capacity in January.
Edwardsport generated 19,644 megawatt hours of electricity, which is enough for 20,000 homes.
The new plant has a maximum capacity of nearly 460,000 megawatt hours in a month.
So what’s the problem?
Duke says that a few systems like the lock hopper flush valve, and the performance heater boiler feed water system all had problems.
The plant also went offline once in January when outdoor equipment froze in frigid temperatures. Duke says that they aren’t sure if these are design flaws or simply growing pains of a new plant but the problems are being addressed.
This is good because rate payers will see a close to 15% hike in their bills to help pay for the plant.
