There is a new way for telemarketers and robocallers to try and get you to answer the phone when they call.
When your phone rings, you look at the caller ID and the number displayed… is your own.
It’s called caller ID “spoofing."
The Better Business Bureau says the newest spoofing devices let the marketers display the exact number they are calling. Spoofing is legal, and it's used legitimately by private investigators and lawyers. Experts recommend that to avoid getting these calls to never answer an unknown number.
If you do answer and you can find out who is calling and get their number to call back, report that information to the do not call list complaint hotline.
