Putnamville Correctional Facility is currently on lock-down due to an assault and subsequent death of offender Darwin Elmore, states a release this morning from the facility. On June 12 at about 6:45 p.m., a radio call was made within the facility for assistance due to an offender on offender stabbing in a general population dorm. Emergency Medical Services was called, and the coroner formally pronounced Elmore deceased at 11:32 p.m. The incident is pending investigation with the Indiana State Police who have identified a primary suspect believed responsible for the death of Elmore, the release states. The suspect’s name will not be released until he is formally charged. The suspect has been isolated from the general prison population for his safety and the safety of other prisoners. An autopsy of the victim is being performed today to determine the official cause of death. Formal charges are anticipated through the Putnam County Prosecutor’s office. Elmore, 34, and an Indianapolis native, was currently serving two consecutive sentences for dealing cocaine out of Marion County. His earliest projected release date was June 8, 2016. His family has been notified.
