This morning at 9:15, Indiana State Police and Vermillion County emergency agencies responded to a two vehicle crash on State Road 63 at SR 234 which left one person dead and one critically injured. 29 year old Joshua R. Ellis, of Williamsport, Indiana was pronounced deceased at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
The passenger in the car 29 year old Richard A. Ogborn, of Williamsport, Indiana is in critical condition and was airlifted to Methodist Hospital for head and internal injuries
Preliminary investigation revealed a northbound tractor-trailer on SR63 driven by 43-year-old Cory Bushong of Hoopeston, Illinois, was attempting to pass through the SR 234 intersection, when a 1995 Geo Prism car driven by Ellis pulled into the path of the tractor-trailer. The passenger car was struck broadside on the driver’s side.
Both Ellis and Ogborn were extricated by members of the Cayuga Fire/Rescue Department with assistance from Perrysville Fire/Rescue Department and transported to Union Hospital of Clinton with critical injuries. Ellis and Ogborn were later airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis by Lifeline Air Ambulance Service.
Preliminary toxicology reports indicated Ellis tested positive for marijuana. Witness reports indicated Ellis appeared to be using his cell phone at the time of the crash. The tractor-trailer had the right of way at the time of the crash.
A commercial vehicle inspection of the tractor-trailer was conducted by ISP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Trooper Brent Hoover and showed no deficiencies and no citations were issued.
