The Vigo County Sheriff's Department has spent nearly $80,000 sending inmates to other jails. The cost comes from 21 inmates housed in Parke and Knox counties at $35 per day for each inmate. Sheriff Greg Ewing says his department can't sustain the expense and he wants help.
An ACLU lawsuit filed against the sheriff's department and county commissioners in 2013 claims the jail was overcrowded and inmates were sleeping on the floor. Sheriff Ewing says instead, inmates were sleeping on plastic risers recommended by the Department of Correction.
There are currently 236 people behind bars in the Vigo County Jail. That's under the 268 person capacity, but Sheriff Ewing says it will stay that way until a solution is reached.
