An Indiana Republican state senator is asking his wife to take his seat as he deploys to Afghanistan as a member of the Navy reserve.
Sen. Jim Banks of Columbia City will head overseas in September and return at the end of April or in early May.
State law allows sitting lawmakers to leave on deployments and continue serving in the Legislature after they return.
To fill the seat a party caucus can select a temporary fill in.
He wants his wife to take the seat.
He wont have to worry about getting his seat back even though he will be gone during the election as he is running un-opposed and when he wins he will be sworn in by Skype.
