Is Lorde Really 17? Yes, and Here's the Proof

Ever since Lorde became a star thanks to her Grammy-winning song "Royals," one thing on which most people agree is that she seems much older than her 17 years.  In fact, there are even some who've suggested online that the New Zealand teen is lying about her age.  But now, one website has gone to great lengths to prove that she really is just a teenage girl: they've obtained a copy of her birth certificate.

The website The Hairpin reports that they've paid just over seventeen bucks to obtain a copy of the certificate, which its now posted for all to see.  It clearly states that Lorde -- birth name Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor -- was born November 7, 1996.  Oh, and she's female, and really is a New Zealand native, in case you were wondering about that, too.

Specifically, the website posts a copy of what's labeled the "birth registration -- data printout," which includes a birth registration number for Lorde.  That's what the website is saying is the birth certificate, but unless we want to accuse them on being complicit in the alleged scam, we'll take them at their word.

By the way, one supposed piece of evidence that Lorde is older than she says she is concerns a comment that she made to New Zealand's Rookie magazine, speaking about how a certain movie, Sofia Coppola's 1999 film The Virgin Suicides , influenced her.  "It really resonated with me as a teenager," she said, and then added, "I mean, I am still a teenager."  This is supposedly "proof" that Lorde forgot about her alleged charade and then had to backpedal.

Lorde is well aware, by the way, that some haters just can't believe that someone as well-spoken and self-possessed as she is could be 17.  When asked about the theories online at a Vanity Fair pre-Grammy party, she responded by deadpanning , "Hi, I’m Ella and I’m actually 45.”
