Indiana Short Session Begins

We are only two days into the Indiana Legislatures short 10 week session and the battles have begun.

The governor's plan to eliminate a $1 billion tax on corporations will be changed drastically by some of his fellow Republicans in the Indiana House of Representatives.

Gov. Mike Pence is campaigning for a phase-out of the business personal property tax.

It’s placed on equipment and he believes it discourages economic development.

Republicans in the House are proposing giving local county governments the choice on whether to drop the tax or not and only on new equipment.

Democrats who worry about the effect on local governments that rely on the tax liked the idea.

The governor says he likes that idea as a first step.

Republican leaders have also said that making a gay marriage ban part of the state constitution is not on their agenda.

Democrats want it dropped.

Republican House Speaker Bosma will talk about how he plans to handle the issue today.
