The Indiana House Ways and Means Committee has voted in favor a moratorium on the building of new nursing homes.
The one year ban on new construction is to give lawmakers time to decide if a longer ban is needed.
The problem is the continuing debate between the state’s existing nursing homes and developers leading a wave of construction in anticipation of retiring baby boomers.
The CEO of Mainstreet Properties, Zeke Turner, says that his new homes are providing better senior care at the same cost as older nursing homes.
Mainstreet is currently building a new home in Terre Haute at 3rd Street and 8th Avenue near Union Hospital.
