Friday the Vigo County Sheriff's Office received a complaint about an ongoing phone scam but with a new twist.
According to detective Jason Fischer, he received a call from a Vigo County resident in a panic regarding a call she received about her imminent arrest.
The suspect, Melanie Johnson, told the victim that if she did not send $1300 immediately that she would be arrested for check fraud. Johnson requested a money gram from the victim.
"Thank goodness the victim had the wherewithal to contact the Sheriff's Office...
This is a new twist to an old scam and citizens should be vigilant", Sheriff Greg Ewing said. Detective Fischer spoke with the victim who reported that her caller ID showed "Vigo County Sheriff" with a phone number of 760-280-0261.
"This is caller ID spoofing where programs are used to change the caller ID", said Detective Fischer. Citizens should be aware of this new twist and if in doubt call your local law enforcement agency.
