Following her MTV pre-show performance of "Boom Clap" on Sunday, Charli XCX has now debuted the new video for "Break the Rules," her current single.
Like "Fancy," her hit video with Iggy Azalea , "Break the Rules" is also set in a high school. It features actress Rose McGowan , best known for her roles in movies like Jawbreaker, Grindhouse: Planet Terror and in the TV show Charmed.
In the clip, Charli and a pack of tough-looking girls stride confidently all over the school grounds, and goof around on a school bus. "I don't wanna go to school/I just wanna break the rules," Charli sings. The school bus pulls up in front of a lingerie shop, where Charli tries on various outfits as her girls give their opinions.
That night at prom, Charli walks in wearing a slinky white slip dress and white fur stole. McGowan, playing "The Chaperone," looks at her disapprovingly. Charli makes her way to the stage and takes over the band's mic, singing while her girls dance behind her. As she frolics and pouts, McGowan douses her with a bucket of pink stuff, in an homage to the movie Carrie, where Carrie, the prom queen, gets doused with pig's blood. But it doesn't stop Charli -- she just keeps on dancing.
"I was inspired by movies like Jawbreaker and Carrie for the 'Break the Rules' video," Charli explains in a statement. "I never went to prom when I was at school so this was kind of me living out my weird fantasy of what prom would be like in my head. I asked Rose McGowan to be in the video and I never ever thought she would say yes, but she did... so she came to prom too... And she trashed it!"
"Break the Rules" is from Charli's upcoming album Sucker , out October 21.
