TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The American Red Cross is calling for blood donations during the holiday season.
The organization says blood donations typically decrease around the holidays. The pandemic also forced the cancelation of some blood drives.
Rodney Wilson, Communications Manager of American Red Cross Blood Services, says blood only has a shelf-life of about 40 days.
“There are patients that are still in the hospital that need transfusions even on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and even during the pandemic. Medical treatments still have to continue and so it is essential, and vital, that people continue to donate blood so patients of all kinds get the treatments that they need,” says Wilson.
He says all blood types are needed, as well as convalescent plasma to help treat COVID-19 patients.
