A follow up to a story on sex offenders being housed at a local motel.
It was discovered that the local EconoLodge had a contract with the Indiana State Prison System to temporarily house sex offenders that had recently been released from prison.
The discovery was made when one of those offenders allegedly tried to molest a child who was also staying at that same motel with her parents.
A search of the sex offender registry showed that several sex offenders were staying at the motel on Margaret Avenue.
Now EconoLodge corporate says that the local motel is no longer an EconoLodge franchise as of April 15, and the motel had 90 days to change its signage. The state has already cancelled its contract with the local motel to house sex offenders.
Convicted sex offenders may still stay at the motel if they wish and the state may reimburse those expenses but there is no longer an automatic agreement.
