Some Vigo County officials are trying to figure out just what happened to nearly $26,000 in missing money.
The State Board of Accounts found the difference during an audit.
It appears that the bookeeping error goes back 10 years and no one has been able or tried very hard to fix the problem.
Dave Crockett was the county treasurer when the discrepancy was discovered (he is now the county clerk) and he has said a county employee’s mistakes are behind this money mix-up.
The employee connected to the problem was terminated.
There are now many questions, such as why was nothing done to correct the book keeping problems and figure out why the books were $26,000 off, and why the State Board Of Accounts hasn’t brought the problem up in the past during the annual audit and what is going to be don’t to fix the problem.
The County Council will discuss the problem at their May meeting.
