Coal Company Says New EPA Rule Means Your Electric Bill Will Be Higher

Your electricity bill could nearly double in the near future and a local coal company says that you can thank the EPA for that.

New regulations announced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will cut down on coal production.

Sunrise Coal says that coal produces about 80 percent of the electricity used here in Indiana and nearly 40% nation wide.

The new rule affects new plants for now but will likely be pushed onto existing coal plants in the near future.

The EPA says the new rules are meant to reduce greenhouse gases.

Sunrise says that coal use has tripled since the 70’s but greenhouse gas emissions from coal-generated electricity have dropped 80 percent.
