With Tax Collections Down, Indiana Tries To Tighten The Belt

tight budget
tight budget

We told you last week that state tax collections are below forecasts and now budget officials are telling agency chiefs to cut spending.

Through the first three months of the current state fiscal year, revenue has come in $73.5 million less than predicted by the forecast used by lawmakers in writing the 2014-15 state budget.

The Office of Management and Budget and the State Budget Agency has now sent a memo telling state agencies how they can help to preserve the state's $2 billion budget reserve. Those steps include limiting travel, carpooling, using video conferencing instead of in-person meetings; issuing required reports online instead of on paper; carefully managing overtime expenses; and using Department of Correction prisoner labor, if appropriate.
