The X Factor "Four-Chair Challenge" continued on Thursday. The acts in each category will compete for one of four available spots. Simon Cowell has the groups, Kelly Rowland has the singers over the age of 25 and Paulina Rubio is mentoring the boys. Demi Lovato , who has the girls, continued the process of picking her final four.
Here's a rundown of the Thursday’s action:
Nineteen-year-old Simone Torrez , a long Island native and student who started singing when she was nine, kicked things off with her version Sam Cooke ’s “A Change Is Gonna Come.” Paulina said she related to the singer. Simon called the song choice “a joke.” Demi agreed that the song choice wasn’t great and said she “didn’t see a star.” She offered Simone a seat anyway, switching out Bree Randall , who was picked during Wednesday’s show.
Shy Danielle Geimer , 15, wants to become a neurosurgeon if her singing career doesn’t pan out. She chose the Ray Charles classic “Georgia on My Mind” for her song. Kelly told the singer that she sang her “face off.” Simon noted how humble Danielle was and advised her to never change. Demi had the final say and put Geimer in her final four, and just like that, Simone Torrez was out of the competition.
Sixteen-year-old Rylie Brown participated in beauty pageants as a kid, but focused on the talent portions. She’s hoping the competition will make her dreams come true. She performed Robbie Williams ’ “Angels.” Kelly thought it was the wrong song choice. Simon commented on her wardrobe, suggesting her mother picked it out. Demi complimented the singer’s outfit and voice, but didn’t think she was ready for the competition. She was sent home.
Next, it was 20-year-old Las Vegas native Primrose Martin , a full-time student and daughter of Kool and the Gang vocalist Skip Martin . She sang Michael Jackson ’s “Blame It on the Boogie.” Kelly was disappointed with the performance. Paula agreed and Simon called it “beyond awful” and “the longest minute-and-a-half” of his life. Primrose would not go down without a fight and kept singing, in spite of the judges urging her to stop. Primrose finally stopped and was sent home.
Miami native Rion Paige , 13, struggles with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, a condition that affects her joints and causes her hands to curve differently. She sang Rascal Flatts ’ “I Won’t Let Go,” bringing the crowd and her fellow contestants to tears. Kelly loved the excitement when Rion sang. Simon agreed and commented “We’re only scratching the surface here.” Demi called the singer a “very special girl” and gave her a seat. Unfortunately, that forced Ashly Moore to be switched out.
The night’s last performer was 17-year-old student Ellona Santiago . Her family moved to San Lorenzo, California, from the Philippines when Ellona was 11 months old. She tackled Zedd ’s “Clarity” for her song. Kelly said the teen sounded like “a beast.” Paula said the performance was “amazing,” while Simon called her performance some of the best vocals he’s heard in the girl category. Demi agreed, but felt something was missing, prompting Simon to disagree. After much hesitation, Lovato put Santiago in her final four. She took Jaimie Pineda ’s place in the competition.
In the end, Danielle Geimer , Rion Paige , Khaya Cohen and Ellona Santiago are the four girls who are still in the competition.
The X Factor returns on Wednesday at 8 p.m. Eastern time on Fox.
