As if you haven't heard Katy Perry's "Roar" enough this year, the song has been tapped by NBC to soundtrack its promotion of the upcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
Variety reports that starting Thursday, you'll be seeing a promo for the Olympics during NBC's Today show, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and during the National Dog Show. The promo depicts Olympic athletes celebrating their big moments as "Roar" plays in the background.
John Miller , the chief marketing officer of NBC Sports Group, tells Variety that NBC decided to use Katy's song about three months ago. "’Roar’ celebrates the jubilation of the athlete in a moment of triumph as well as the pure joy that comes from watching the Games,” he said.
Songs used in Olympic promos generally experience massive sales boosts. The last song that benefited from this effect was Phillip Phillips' "Home," which was used extensively in coverage of gymnastics in last year's Summer Games.
