Vigo County Schools Superintendent Dan Tanoos made a presentation to the Terre Haute Parks board asking for a long term lease of ground at VoorheesPark.
The Vigo County School Corporation wants to an aquatic center, including a parking area at the south side park.
The new center would replace pools and the three county high schools.
Last month, the Vigo County School Board approved VoorheesPark as the site for the aquatics center, which will cost $9.8 million and is to be funded with a bond issue. Garmong Construction said that the plan is to break ground in 2014 and complete construction in about 14 months.
The mayor and others said that they want the new center to have a grand entrance with a boulevard drive.
School officials said that there might be some times that the public might make use of the facilities and that public restrooms for the park might be included.
The next step is to finalize a lease agreement.
