Why It's Awesome That Michael B. Jordan Auditioned For The Tupac Shakur Biopic

By Shannon Houston, Hollywood Staff

Michael B. Jordan (who is awesome) was recently on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter's awards issue and he revealed some exciting information in a roundtable interview with Forest Whitaker, Matthew McConaughey and some other Hollywood heavyweights. He casually mentioned that he had auditioned for the upcoming Tupac Shakur biopic, and we couldn't be more psyched. We assume that rappers and actors alike must have been coming out of the woodwork to audition for this role. Tupac's mother Afeni Shakur is on board with the project, and all of the rights to his music have been secured. The only thing the movie is missing right now is Jordan confirmed in the lead.Jordan may not be able to rap, but that might actually be a good thing in this case. Tupac actually studied theatre before becoming a rapper, and we'd rather see a legitimate actor take on this role before anyone else. And with his work on The Wire, Chronicle, Friday Night Lights and Fruitvale Station, Jordan knows how to play a wide range of characters. Tupac was, without a doubt, an icon of the early '90s, and a complex figure, not easily pinned down or defined. Not a lot of guys could accurately capture the rapper/actor/poet/sex symbol/self-proclaimed thug, but we think if anyone can pull it off it's Jordan. Here's hoping we get confirmation soon that the audition was a success, and that he will, in fact, be playing the late, great Tupac.
