Cigarettes have been banned in many areas including jails for sometime now.
An alternative is now being looked at some jails.
Two southern Illinois counties are now letting inmates buy and smoke e-cigarettes.
They produce a vapor instead of a cloud of smoke.
Some jail administrators say adding them to the commissary list has upped morale and reduced violence.
Others say that inmates could try to use the e-cigs as a weapon or could swallow the parts for attention and that it is jail, you lose your freedom and if you want to smoke then don’t do something to get arrested.
Saline and White are the two counties in southern Illinois trying it out. Franklin, Wabash and Williamson counties are considering trying it
