Pharrell Williams is one of three mentors on Bravo's newest reality competition series, Styled to Rock , executive produced by Rihanna . Although Pharrell has experience in this role -- he was a mentor on season two of NBC's The Voice -- the hit-making music producer said he doesn't like the title.
"I don't call it being a mentor because I like to talk to people at an eye level and make the situation very neutral so they have all the reason to be the main character in the room," Pharrell said revealed on Monday's Live with Kelly and Michael, "
Pharrell mentors, or whatever he prefers to call it, alongside Rihanna’s personal stylist Mel Ottenberg and model Erin Wasson . The three give 12 up-and-coming designers advice as they try to create fashionable looks. The competition premiered on Bravo October 25 after the series was bumped from the now defunct Style Network.
Pharrell said on Styled to Rock , designers are given "these mediums and you sort of have to express yourself in the best way possible...we were really tough on them."
Pharrell likened the experience to being in the studio to create hits for artists, such as Robin Thicke and T.I. on the song that Pharrell produced, "Blurred Lines." It also worked for Daft Punk with "Get Lucky," another song Pharrell produced and that features him. Just don't ask him to choose his favorite collabo.
"It'd be really tough to narrow down to one person because a collaboration is more than just working with someone," Pharrell explained. "It's also like learning their process, getting a good feel for their energy, [and] the things that they like and they don't like."
You can catch Pharrell on Bravo's Styled to Rock Friday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
