Flying Dutchmen, Lakers and the Spartans Get Wins, Red Wings and Blackhawks Score Big

UNDATED (WHTC) – The Hope football team is going to play for a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championship as well as a berth in the NCAA Division III Playoffs.  The Flying Dutchmen won at Trine 35-7 on Saturday to stay one game behind first-place Albion in the MIAA standings, with Albion coming to Ray & Sue Smith Stadium on Nov. 16.  Hope improved to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in MIAA play.

The Grand Valley State football team used an extremely balanced offense and second-half defensive dominance to key the Lakers to a big 31-21 GLIAC victory over visiting Hillsdale on Saturday evening.  The Lakers move to 7-2 overall with a 5-2 record in the GLIAC.  The Lakers travel to Wayne State for next week’s game.

The 24th-ranked Michigan State Spartans showed why they have one of the best defenses in the nation on Saturday. The Spartans limited the 23rd-ranked Michigan Wolverines to minus-48 rushing yards in a 29-6 victory.  It was the Spartans' most lopsided win in the series since 1967.  Next up for the Wolverines is a game on November 9th at Nebraska.  The Spartans next game is also against Nebraska on November 16th.

Petr Mrazek only needed to stop 14 shots in goal as the Red Wings dominated the Oilers 5-0 at Rexall Place.  Daniel AlfRedsson logged a pair of assists and Jakub Kindl [[ YA-cub KIN-dull ]] scored a goal to go with an assist.  Detroit outshot Edmonton 31-14.  Edmonton lost its fifth-in-a-row and is 3-10-and-2.  Next game is in Winnipeg against the Jets on Monday night.

Brandon Bollig and Nick Leddy each registered a goal and an assist to guide the Blackhawks to a 5-1 win over the Jets in Manitoba.  Niklas Hjalmarsson, Patrick Sharp and Ben Smith also lit the lamp for Chicago, which improved to 9-2-and-3.  The Blackhawks travel south for a game on Tuesday in Carolina against the Hurricanes. 

 

A two-goal game by Tomas Jurco and strong special teams performances helped the Grand Rapids Griffins to a 6-4 win over the Lake Erie Monsters at Quicken Loans Arena on Friday.  The Grand Rapids Griffins play in Rockford against the Ice Hogs this afternoon.

 

The Pistons are at the Palace tonight to take on the Celtics.  While Josh Smith has been solid, the Detroit Pistons may become even more dangerous on the offensive end with their other big-name acquisition on the court.  Brandon Jennings could make his season debut when the Pistons go for a fifth consecutive home victory over the winless Boston Celtics on tonight.

The 76ers rallied from a 20-point hole to down the Bulls 107-104 at Wells Fargo Center on Saturday night.  Carlos Boozer had 22 points and 10 boards for Chicago, which dropped to 1-2 on the season. Luol Deng added 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Derrick Rose registered 13 points and six assists, but was just 4-of-14 from the field.  Next game is on Wednesday against the Pacers.

 

Sunday Night Football on 1450 WHTC this evening showcases the 5-2 Indianapolis Colts as they travel to Houston to take on the 2-5 Oilers.  Game coverage begins at 7:30 P.M.

The Lions had a big win last week against Dallas, 31-30.  The weekend is a bye for them.  They’ll be traveling to Chicago next week to take on the Bears at Soldier Field.  The Bears are playing this week.  They’ll be in Green Bay for Monday Night Football tomorrow evening.  Game coverage begins at 8 P.M. on 1450 WHTC.

The Detroit Tigers will hire Brad Ausmus to replace Jim Leyland as manager, according to multiple reports.  The 44-year-old Ausmus will be in Detroit Sunday to finalize the deal. The  former  major league  catcher, who  has never  been a  manager at the big league  level,  has been  a special  assistant in the  San Diego Padres' front office since 2010. Leyland retired following Detroit's ALCS loss to the Boston Red Sox. The Tigers were 93-69 this past season and  won the American League Central title  for the third  straight year. Leyland posted a mark of 700-597 during his eight-year tenure in Detroit.
