In the past year or so, the American charts have been stormed by contestants from The X Factor's U.K. incarnation, including One Direction , Cher Lloyd and Olly Murs . Ironically, none of these artists actually won the competition...but now, finally, a winning act is poised to conquer the U.S.: Little Mix .
The British girl group, made up of Perrie Edwards , Jesy Nelson , Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirwall , won The X Factor U.K . in 2011, the year after One Direction came in third. Their U.S. debut, DNA, is out this week, and you've already heard their song "Wings" on Glee and American Idol . While some acts might consider it a bit daunting to break America, the group says they can't wait to blow up worldwide.
"It's the dream," Leigh-Anne tells ABC News Radio. "Like, we want to be global. We want to be international and take over the world, so we're ready for it."
Of course, the group does have a bit of a road map: the career of One Direction. The two groups are friends, and Little Mix member Perrie Edwards is dating 1D's Zayn Malik , so they've been able to see first hand what it takes to hit the big time in the U.S.
"They have done so well. I mean One Direction are huge; storming it!" says Leigh-Anne. "So I think the main thing is, literally, just to be ourselves, stand for what we believe in. And we're just gonna work so hard because we want to do it!"
Like One Direction, Little Mix all started out as solo competitors on The X Factor , and were then put together by the judges into a group. Since it's been quite a while since there's been a female group on the U.S. charts, Little Mix think it's good timing that they're coming out now.
"Definitely. I think there's a gap for us so it'd be nice," Perrie tells ABC News Radio. "I think there's been a lot of boy bands and stuff, so it's time for a bit more girl power.
But what about the music? Well, the Little Mix girls co-wrote much of the material on DNA , which features guest appearances by '90s music icons T-Boz of TLC and Missy Elliott . "Basically it is just a little mix of everything," says Jade. "We have so many different musical influences that we wanna kinda show everybody that."
According to Jade, the album features everything from old school, to pop, to R&B to slow jams. "We just literally wanted to put as much in it as we could," she explains. "We wrote like, eight or nine out of the 12 songs on there so we're really proud of it and we just can't wait for everybody else to hear it!"
