Vigo County’s newest officer shows that he can do the job.
On Wednesday Vigo County Sheriff K-9 officer Rudy was called in to the Vigo County Jail for a random cell block search.
K-9 Rudy showed an extreme interest in a stainless steel toilet in one particular cell.
The jail staff examined the toilet and could not see anything visible but Rudy knew what they would eventually find.
The jail staff used a piece of wire to retrieve anything that was concealed in the toilet drain.
Officers found a wire attached to a plastic bag containing a cell phone.
The sealed baggie was originally used for food items purchased off the commissary.
Officers are now trying to determine which inmate went to great lengths to conceal the cell phone in a plastic bag under water.
Deputies say that cell phones are extremely dangerous inside a correctional setting as they can be used to plan escapes, assault staff, as well as to interact with criminals outside the facility.
K-9 Rudy is one of only a very few in the nation to posses the skill of sniffing out cell phones.
He along with his Handler Officer Troy Ramsey will be kept very busy inspecting many jail cells through out the Wabash Valley.
