Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj have been sniping at each other ever since they began as judges on American Idol , and during a Twitter rant earlier this month Nicki seemed to suggest that Mariah was jealous of her, accusing the veteran singer of being "INSECURE." Whether you believe that or not, it's not the first time that Nicki has felt like her outsized personality has caused friction between her and her peers.
Reflecting on her childhood, Nicki tells Teen Vogue , "I encountered jealous girls a lot -- it wasn't like I had nice clothes, so they couldn't be envious of that, but they were like, 'You shouldn't be that confident.'"
Nicki says that there were times when she had to call her older brother to meet her after school in case someone wanted to turn a verbal conflict into something physical. " Sometimes there'd be a fight, sometimes not. I let people know I wasn't going to be pushed around. What it came down to is that the bullies wanted me to bow down to them. And I just wouldn't."
Born in Trinidad and raised in Queens, New York, Nicki says she bounced around a lot. Being the new girl led her to develop a thick skin. "Every time my parents fought, my mother would have us move and I would have to go to a new school, which meant I'd have to face the task of making new friends," Nicki says.
The rapper tells Teen Vogue that she would always worry about whether she'd be liked and "dreaded" the whole ordeal. Years later, Nicki sees similarities between what happened in school and what's happening in the entertainment business now.
"People treat this business like it's high school. It can absolutely feel like one big popularity contest, and you know what? I can't be bothered," she says. "I can't allow myself to play ridiculous games with grown adults in the industry. I can't be nice to someone just because they're hot right now. I can't do it."
In fact, it seems that Nicki's drama with Mariah may soon be coming to an end. Rumor has it that all the American Idol judges are going to be fired. Fox, however, isn't going to say anything about the network's plans until the current season wraps up later this week.
