If you look closely at your cell phone bill you will see a 911 charge of a dollar or two.
That money goes to the 911 service centers in the phones home area code.
Since there is no long distance charges on cell phones any more there isn’t a lot of incentive to change your number when you move.
So if you come to town and stay but don’t change your number then that fee still goes back to the area you came from.
The local 911 center doesn’t get the money.
If you think that the amount of money is small, think again.
In VigoCounty that fee amounts to $600,000 of a $1.5 million dollar budget.
Local officials are asking that if you live here then change your number that way the local people that answer your 911 call when you are in trouble will get the money that you already pay to help their operations.
