U.S. 40 in western VigoCounty from the WabashRiver heading west into West Terre Haute to Bennett Lane is now officially National Avenue. Westbound from there toward the state line will be referred to as National Drive. Officials say the change is because now U.S. 40 is really the same as I-70.
The Vigo County Sheriff’s department is telling everyone that we need to get used to this in a hurry because if we call and tell them we need help on “US40” they will probably wind up on the Interstate instead of the highway that runs through West Terre Haute.
That’s something that won’t come easy since the road through West Terre Haute has been known as “US40” since the highway was laid across the country.
Online and GPS maps have already started to change.
House and business numbers will not change.
