The need for a new facility for the Terre Haute Humane Society has been known for quite a while.
The current facility on south Fruitridge has ventilation, electrical and plumbing problems.
Now moving the animal shelter to an Ivy Tech building in southern Vigo County is actually getting closer.
A feasibility study related to a joint fundraising campaign favorably and officials hope to launch that campaign in the next six months.
Up to $3.5 million dollars needs to be raised to renovate and equip a facility.
Ivy Tech officials say that this won’t be a merger but a partnership.
The humane society will get the new physical plant it needs and veterinarian technician students will get the experience they need caring for animals in need of health care.
The goal is to have everything put together and running by fall of 2014.
There are also plans to try to solicit the help of entertainer Ellen DeGeneres to bring attention to the project.
A website has been created at www.ivytech.edu/wabashvalley/thhs Anyone interested in volunteering or being part helping to put together plans should contact the Humane Society or Becky Miller at Ivy Tech. Miller can be reached at 812-298-2361 or firstname.lastname@example.org
