Fatal motorcycle accidents in Illinois are up 13 percent, according to data from the Illinois Department of Transportation.
There were 148 motorcycle fatalities in 2012, up from 131 in 2010
The number of registered motorcycle riders in Illinois has increased by 57% in the past ten years.
Illinois State Police say that there is no single reason and that overall motorcycle collisions are down.
One suggested reason is a lack of training in riding a bike, and the other is that riders are not required to wear a helmet.
Illinois is one of three states that does not have a helmet law.
