Obamacare is causing more changes at The Vigo County School Corporation.
Starting this fall VigoCounty schools will no longer provide school bus transportation for middle school athletic events.
Games will start later to give parents more time to transport their children. The corporation might also drop bus transportation to in-county athletic events at the high school level but that has not been decided yet.
Superintendent Dan Tanoos says that for those who can’t arrange transportation for their children, something will be worked out but it’s not clear just what will happen.
Field trips will also be cut back.
Elementary grades will only be allowed one per year.
The reasons cited are the Affordable Care Act and the need to reduce bus driver hours, as well as the need to reduce overall transportation costs. Anyone receiving over 30 hours per week would be required to be covered by the corporation’s health insurance adding a significant cost that the school system can’t afford.
