Thirty-nine animal shelters and rescue groups statewide joined in a national effort Tuesday to stop killing adoptable shelter animals for space and minor health issues.
Just One Day, a national initiative organized by the No Kill Advocacy Center, is partnering with 1,200 animal advocacy groups nationwide for the event, which encourages shelters not to kill any animals on that day.
Every day, about 10,000 animals lose their lives in U.S. shelters, according to the center.
Last year on Just One Day, about 9,000 animals were placed with families or rescue groups nationwide.
The Humane Society of Sullivan County is one local shelter that took part in Just One Day.
