A recent U.S. Supreme Court decision now makes it legal for law enforcement to take a DNA sample from you as the book you into jail upon arrest for a serious crime.
They can do this while taking your finger prints and mug shot.
So when will this practice start here in our area?
No any time soon.
The only states that can take these samples are ones with the law in place.
Right now, Indiana can only take a sample with a warrant, if you are convicted of a felony or with your consent.
The state legislature would have to pass new laws to expand collection but that won’t happen until the next session at the earliest.
