New rules that take affect this fall will make it easier for Illinois students with disabilities to take more classes in high school if they want.
Gym class is mandatory for all students in Illinois, but you can skip the classes if you are an athlete, in band, a member of the ROTC or fall in one of the other exempt classes.
Instead of gym, you can opt for another class.
Now students with disabilities will have the same option.
The new law doesn't automatically excuse kids with disabilities from PE courses.
Local school boards will have to approve the waivers.
