Furlough Affects 10,000 Indiana Civilian Defense Workers

More than 10,000 civilian defense workers in the state of Indiana are being affected by the automatic federal budget cuts.

Unpaid furlough days began on Monday with the affected workers facing 11 unpaid furlough days this summer.  Affected employees are being asked to schedule these days off on Mondays and Fridays.

The furloughs will affect 3,100 Navy employees and 800 Army workers at Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center in southern Indiana.

About 4,000 more civilians working at the Defense Finance and Accounting Services center in Lawrence, Indiana that handles payrolls for the pentagon will be affected as well.

The plan in place by Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel will furlough roughly 650,000 civilian employees nationwide for 11 days.

The furlough started this Monday and runs through September.
