A follow up to a story from yesterday about an inmate who died at the Vigo County Jail.
Police say 48 year old William Powell’s death has been ruled a homicide and an arrest has already been made.
Terre Haute Police say that Jimmy Ross is facing harges of involuntary manslaughter. They have not released any other details and are continuing their investigation.
Here is the story on what happened that night...
Powell was arrested after an altercation Monday and taken to Regional hospital where he was treated and released.
He was then taken to the Vigo County Jail on public intoxication charges.
Around 2 AM inmates alerted jailers that there was a problem and first aid was performed but Powell was pronounced dead a short time later.
Vigo County Coroner Dr. Susan Amos says Powell died from blunt force trauma to the abdomen. That trauma ruptured his intestines, which emptied its contents into his body cavity which caused an infection and death.
His blood alcohol level was over three times the legal limit.
