An inmate at the Vigo County Jail is dead and now authorities are investigating to find out why.

Police say that 48 year old William Powell was in an altercation before being arrested Monday.

He was taken to Regional Hospital where he was treated and released.

Later that night, just after 2 AM inmates alerted staff that Powell was in trouble.

Jail officers started first aid measures and called for an ambulance but they were unable to revive the man and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy is set for today (Wednesday) to determine an exact cause of death.
