The annual report issued last week by the Indiana State Excise Police shows that binge drinking is on the rise with Indiana young people.
Even though alcohol related auto crashes went down those that were busted by Excise had a higher blood alcohol level than ever. The Intensified College Enforcement initiative report shows that there was a 78 percent decline in alcohol-related crashes involving 15- to 20-year-old drunk drivers in the Indiana State University Area.
In 2011, Vigo County had 14 crashes reported however, in 2012, only three crashes were reported in the same age group. The other five campuses monitored by ICE — Ball State, Butler, Notre Dame, Purdue and Indiana universities — also saw dramatic declines in alcohol-related crashes among that age group.
The report did show that of those arrested, there was a higher blood alcohol level on average.
Vigo County as a whole in 2012 had 435 arrest citations issued by excise police, along with 62 warnings.
