Is The Vigo County Coronor Paid Too Little?

Vigo County Coroner Dr. Susan Amos wants a raise from the county.

Amos claims her 2013 salary should be the same as a majority of other county elected officials and has asked the Vigo County Council to raise her pay to $47,858 from $31,905. Amos was quoted in the Trib-Star as saying that “The County has historically paid a physician coroner the same as every other elected official and it has been that way for 16 years. Then in September it is changed. The only difference is I am female and he [former coroner Dr. Roland Kohr] is not.

Councilwoman Kathy Miller said the council’s decision wasn’t about her sex but was determined by state law and math.

Miller also pointed out that her pay was in line with other coroners with similar qualifications across the state.

Another important distinction is that the previous Vigo County Coroner, Dr. Roland Kohr was a licensed pathologist, who saved the county thousand by performing autopsies which Amos won’t be doing.

State law gives the council wide latitude in setting salaries.

The council committee voted to send Amos’ salary request, without a committee recommendation, before the full seven-member council at its March 12 meeting.
