Emergency responders were called out to rescue two people from a body of water behind West Vigo Elementary Saturday night.
Around 6:30 officials say that 21 year old Brennen Chandler and his girlfriend 21 year old Arica Wellman were walking down the Wabashiki Trail, near the levee and water tower, when they decided to take a short cut on their return trip back to their vehicle.
That shortcut took them through wetlands that had frozen over.
They fell through the ice but were able to call for help.
Wellman and Chandler were pulled out.
Wellman was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital.
Chandler was taken to Regional Hospital.
Both were being treated for severe hypothermia and have since been released from the hospital.
