Medical care for jail inmates costs just as much as it does for anyone else.
Last year the Greene County Sheriff's Department spent nearly $150,000 on inmate medical expenses.
Now the department is taking advantage of a law that was passed in 2009 and amended two years later.
It allows county jails to be billed for the cost of inmate health services at the Medicare reimbursement rate, plus 4%.
If no Medicare rate exists, the jail pays 65% of the total cost. In just six months they have saved over $100,000.
