When some young celebrities mark a milestone birthday, they take over some club in Vegas and party all night. Demi Lovato decided to do something a bit different for her 21st birthday Tuesday: she went to Africa.
Demi, as well as some of her family and friends, have traveled to Kenya on " Me to We Volunteer Trip ," which offers international volunteer experiences in destinations around the world. She and her group are volunteering in communities supported by Free the Children , Me to We's charity partner. Among their activities: helping to build a new school, learning about local crafts, and learning about the hours-long walks that young women endure each day to provide clean water for their families.
In a statement, Demi said, "With 21 being a milestone birthday, I wanted a memorable and meaningful way to celebrate, rather than throw a big birthday bash."
She added, "I knew traveling with Me to We and volunteering with Free The Children would give me the opportunity to have a life-changing experience I would never forget, with the people closest to me."
Demi has worked with Free the Children in the past, raising more than $50,000 for its international development projects through her various charity initiatives.
