This week is the 14th annual Work Zone Awareness Week. Officials mark the ceremonial start to highway construction season by reminding people to be careful in construction zones.
Last year in two INDOT workers were killed along with six motorists. Safe driving in the work zones is a top priority for police. The Indiana State Police say that they will be using every thing including several unmarked vehicles and aircraft to catch those who are driving dangerously in construction zones.
Motorists face fines of up to $1,000 for speeding in a work zone; $5,000 for driving recklessly or aggressively. Drivers can learn about highway work zones at TrafficWise.IN.gov or by calling (800) 261-ROAD (7623). Updates on projects and restrictions are also available on Facebook and Twitter.
