Adele's "Someone Like You" was a smash hit single in the U.S., but in her native U.K., its popularity is beyond imagining: it's now officially the most downloaded single in British history.

Britain's Official Charts Company has just announced that total digital singles downloads in the U.K. have topped one billion for the first time, nine years after legal downloads were officially introduced.   Of those billion songs, "Someone Like You" is the song that has been downloaded more than any other, to the tune of 1.46 million.  Yes, that doesn't sound like a lot compared to U.S. sales, but of course, the U.K. has a much smaller population.

The second most popular download in U.K. history is "Moves Like Jagger," which has sold 1.40 million copies, followed by Gotye 's "Somebody That I Used to Know," with 1.38 million.

In other Adele news, she graces the cover of ELLE 's Women in Music issue , and in a feature called "The Stars Come Out for Adele," a bevy of top music stars contribute their thoughts about her rise to fame.  Among those who put in their two cents: Katy Perry , Britney Spears , Glee's Lea Michele , John Mayer and even Barbra Streisand , who Adele got to hang out with at the Oscars in February.

Adele's cover shot was taken at L.A.'s EastWest Studios, where Frank Sinatra recorded his greatest hits, in an effort to capture the singer's "retro crooner style."  The photographer, Thomas Whiteside , tells ELLE that the day of the Adele shoot, it was also his birthday.  "She sang 'Happy Birthday' to me," he boasts.  "Best present ever!"
