Indiana AG Sues To Stop Mailings

The state has filed suit against a company for sending mailings that look like they are from the government, urging Hoosiers to buy documents they can get for just a few dollars.

The state says that Illinois Deed Provider Inc. which also does business as National Record Service Inc. and National Deed Service Inc., sends mailers to property owners offering certified copies of deeds for $59.50 and an additional copy for $20.

The rub is that you can go to your county recorder’s office and get a copy of your deed either for free or at a cost of around a $1 a page.

The state's lawsuit, filed in Allen County Superior Court, accuses the company of violating the Deceptive Consumer Sales Act and the Deceptive Commercial Solicitation Act saying that they make their mailings look like official state documents.

The attorney general office wants the company to stop the mailings and they want consumers to be reimbursed.

They also want they state to be paid back for the cost of the investigation.

If you have received one of these mailings you can file a complaint with the state Attorney General's Office by visiting www.IndianaConsumer.com or call 800-382-5516.
