An apparent illegal dumping ground for old tires in southern VigoCounty.
The area is in a remote area of PrairietonTownship along the 8-mile-long Honey Creek levee, which holds back flood waters from nearby Honey Creek, the WabashRiver and a smaller stream. Residents say that there could be thousands of illegally dumped tires and that this has been a problem for decades.
The area affected covers property with several owners.
County officials are investigating and if the problem is big enough it could be a problem for the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
Old tires are prime breeding grounds for misquotes which can carry West Nile virus.
