OSHKOSH, Wis. (Midwest Communications) - The Oshkosh man convicted of killing his neighbor is asking for his release from a mental hospital.

James Shields murdered Charlie Rayner back in 2006. Shields was convicted of first-degree intentional homicide, but then found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. Shields was committed to a state mental hospital in May 2008. Now less than 2 years after being sent to the facility, he's asking a Winnebago County judge for his release. No hearing has been scheduled yet.
