Cell Phone Anti-Theft Tech

by Ben Olson

Smartphone theft isn't just on the rise- it’s getting increasingly violent.  Mobile device theft is the fastest-growing form of street crime, accounting for one in three robberies across the U.S.  More than a million Americans have had a gadget stolen in the last year, and a worrying number have involved dangerous weapons.  It’s no wonder- a stolen iPhone can go for $300 or more on the black market (don’t get any ideas)!  Industry experts and lawmakers are now working together to come up with a solution.  One suggestion is equipping devices with “kill switch” technology that would render the gadgets inoperable on any network once they've been reported stolen.  If thieves knew they couldn't make a stolen device work, they’d be less likely to nab it.
