I have been WAITING for this movie to come out since I saw previews for it last summer. I've already been twice and plan to catch it in IMAX before long also. But Director Christopher Nolan's latest feature presentation, The Dark Knight Rises failed to be the #1 grossing opening weekend movie

That title still belongs to The Avengers, which set the bar at $207.4 Million. If The Dark Knight Rises would have been released in 3D, it most likely would have shattered the record. 3D movies cost more than standard 2D prices and are factored into the box office reports. 

Dark Knight Rises earned $160 Million this weekend, beating the opening weekend for it's previous installment The Dark Knight by $2 Million.
