Miranda Kerr Causes Autism or Just the Facts

by Brad Ludwig

Before I start this post, you’ll need to read this .

Seriously, you need to read it to get the full context about this particular post. No worries… I’ll wait. Have you read it? Good. Let’s begin.

Behold! The bringer of Autism!

Who pays for this pseudo-science garbage? 100 men were shown pictures and based on the results, they concluded that they’ve unlocked the great mystery of Autism? Thinking Miranda Kerr is more attractive than Christina Hendricks could make your future offspring Autistic? This money is being wasted. Where’s the real science?

I flew to Texas to visit my girlfriend. I could have done a survey, while in airports, that is equally as ‘scientific’ as the ‘Miranda Kerr’ test. I could have asked 2 questions:

  1. Do you fly more than once a month?
  2. Do you have any children that are on the Autism Spectrum?

Using the information, I could use the data to conclude that frequent flights on airplanes can cause your children to have Autism and have it be equally scientifically sound. There are numerous things that supposedly ‘cause’ Autism. Vaccines, wheat, mercury, pesticides, having children later in life… the list goes on. The real answer is, we don’t know. Because we lack that knowledge, coincidence is being used as reasons why Autism exists. The MMR vaccine is given to children at 18 months. This is around the same time that Autism seems to appear. That coincidence has become the basis of anti-immunization misinformation that puts children at risk of avaidable diseases.

What people who don’t have Autistic loved ones don’t realize is that Autistic families are voraciously reading about anything to do with Autism. New studies, articles, blog posts… anything. Why? We know so little about Autism. We want to know if there is something new we can try to help our children communicate or socialize. New strategies to prevent sensory meltdowns/tantrums. To do the best we can for our children to help them navigate a world that is confusing to them. Some people read ridiculous things like the ‘Miranda Kerr study’ and think, “Maybe I did this?” Others, like me, read this and become furious. Useless, misinformation is a waste of time.

DNA, the roadmap of lifeThis is an example of a worthwhile study that uses real science.

A project that is mapping the genomes of 10,000 people on the Autism spectrum from around the world. Previous work in this field helped identify more than 100 genes and gene anomaly combinations that appear in Autistics. How are these genes being altered? At what point are they altering? Again, we don’t know.

Autism Speaks is a part of this program and is a great organization who provides information and funds projects to help humanity understand Autism. They also help educate and advocate for families touched by Autism.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to money. Money to help fund intelligent research that studies the science of Autism. John Stewart’s Night of Too Many Stars fundraiser on Comedy Central has done much to help educate people and fund programs for the Autistism community. I mentioned Autism Speaks and their efforts. The money is used to help fight these statistics .

  • 1 in 88 children in the US have Autism
  • 50% wander away, at least once, before they are 17
  • 91% of those children, who are under 14, drown

We need to fight this. It starts with facts and real science, not bogus surveys about mens’ curve preferences.
